2008 Hurricane Season Opens
How to Survive a Natural Disaster
June 1st marks the beginning of hurricane season. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's 2008 Atlantic hurricane season outlook indicates a very high 75% chance of an above-normal hurricane season. They predict a range of 13-17 named storms, 7-10 hurricanes, and 3-5 major hurricanes [categories 3-4-5 on the Saffir-Simpson scale]. After a calm season last year the fear is complacency among residents of the Southeast US. Since moving to St. Petersburg, Florida I’ve attended a business continuation seminar held by the Tampa Bay Red Cross in late May.
The best tip I learned from Derek R. Alden, Planning Coordinator was to create a one minute bag and a 30 minute box to grab as you run out the door. What if the police came to your door and said, “There’s been a chemical spill, you have one minute to evacuate”. What would you take with you? That’s what goes into your one minute GO (Get Out) bag.
After the session I did some online research to find disaster planning resources and I’ve updated the list for the 2007 season. Below are links you can visit to learn more about what to do before, during and after a natural disaster.
The links below will open in separate windows and lead either to web pages or PDF files. Get prepared for a safe and fun summer!
